Technology is often viewed as a linear progression, as a series of improvements over what came before. Sometimes a particular device may be viewed as outside the lineage, and therefore a failure. But... technology should be more accurately considered as a series of constructions that take place in particular social settings.

Looking at directional input devices for games (ie ways of selecting direction) is an easy way to demonstrate what we already know, but perhaps haven't directly considered.
